Inlay and Onlay Treatment Process

STAGE 1: Inlays and Onlays Consultation:

During your initial consultation, our experienced dental professionals will conduct a comprehensive examination to assess the following:

  1. The affected tooth and the extent of damage.
  2. The condition of the nerve within the tooth.
  3. The health of the supporting gum tissue.

Based on this assessment, our dentists will explain the treatment options available to you, taking into consideration your individual needs and preferences. This consultation is an opportunity for you to ask any questions or seek clarification about the proposed treatment.

STAGE 2: Tooth Preparation and 3D Scanning:

To prepare the tooth for an inlay or onlay, the decayed tooth material will be removed, to ensure that there is a healthy wall of tooth structure for the restoration to fit into. In the case of an onlay, your dentist will carefully prepare any unsupported or weakened tooth section so that the onlay can cover and protect the tooth structure, so that it is strong enough to withstand normal chewing forces.

A 3D scanner, known as CEREC, is employed to create a precise 3D model of your teeth without needing traditional physical impressions/molding. This digital model serves as the foundation for crafting your inlay or onlay. We typically offer same-day inlay and onlay restorations, however in certain cases it may be have to be placed on a different day.

STAGE 3: Designing, Milling, and Hand Finishing of the Inlay/Onlay:

Utilizing advanced CEREC CAD/CAM software, our in house dental laboratory designs the inlay or onlay, taking into account factors such as biting forces and its compatibility with adjacent teeth. The restoration is then milled in-house, and our skilled dental technician performs meticulous hand-finishing to ensure the restoration's fit and aesthetics meet our high standards.

STAGE 4: Cementing the Inlay/Onlay:

Before permanently cementing the inlay or onlay, your dentist will conduct a final assessment of its fit and aesthetics. Adjustments will be made if necessary, and the restoration will be polished for a natural appearance.

STAGE 5: Post-Procedure Review:

Approximately one week after the placement of your inlay or onlay, your dentist will schedule a follow-up appointment to ensure that you are adapting well to the restoration. This is an opportune time to report any discomfort or issues you may have encountered so that adjustments can be made, if needed. Some slight adjustments may be necessary to further refine the bite, which can be done during this visit.
