Root Canal Treatment Treatment Process

STAGE 1: Root Canal Consultation:

During the initial root canal consultation, a comprehensive examination and treatment planning process is conducted, which includes:

  • Identifying the Problem Tooth: Determining which tooth is causing pain or issues that require attention.
  • Assessing Damage and Decay: Evaluating the extent of damage or decay affecting the tooth, including any visible signs of deterioration.
  • Nerve Status Examination: Assessing the condition of the tooth's nerve, determining if it is alive and healthy, infected, or non-vital (dead).

Based on this information, our dentists will take photos and digital X-rays of your teeth and explain the treatments options available and we need to make sure that consent is granted and that all alternative options have been considered. This is an opportunity to ask your dentist any questions you may have about the treatment. Our philosophy is for both you and the dentist to have a detailed understanding of the situation so that you can make the right decision for yourself.

Root canal treatment can involve one to three appointments depending on the severity of the infection and difficulty of the root canal. It is important to attend all the appointments to complete the root canal.

STAGE 2: Cleaning and Shaping of the Root Canals:

Before starting the root canal, the dentist will numb the tooth with local anesthesia. The initial preparation and shaping of the root canal involve opening the tooth to access the inner nerve and pulpal tissues and cleaning them using fine file instruments. Different teeth have different numbers of root canals and during root canal treatment; A series of X-rays will be taken throughout the procedure to make sure the files are reaching the end of the root and all the canals are being adequately cleaned and shaped.

At this stage, there might be some discomfort/pain after the anesthetic wears off. It is recommended to take some painkillers by the dentist to help with this. The discomfort/pain should gradually subside in 2-3 days' time.

 STAGE 3: Root Canal Filling:

Once the tooth has settled, the root canals are filled, and the pulpal chamber is sealed in order to protect the tooth. For most teeth, it is highly recommended to have a crown fitted in order to improve the long-term success of root canal treatment and to prevent the tooth from breaking.

At this stage, there might be some discomfort/pain after the anesthetic wears off. It is recommended to take some painkillers by the dentist to help with this. The discomfort/pain should gradually subside in 2-3 days' time. For some patients, there may be a mild discomfort lasting a few weeks to a few months. Please consult your dentist if your discomfort is unbearable or persists for a long time.
