Sinus Lift Surgery Introduction

Introduction

A Sinus Lift, also known as maxillary sinus floor augmentation, is a surgical procedure performed to increase the amount of bone in the maxilla (upper jaw) to facilitate the placement of a dental implant. This procedure is vital for creating sufficient space and support for the successful placement of dental implants. After the sinus grafting procedure, it is important to understand the post-operative care requirements and potential complications.

A bone grafting material will be used to augment the bone. There are many types available, ranging from animal and human sources. If you have concerns or requirements about the type of graft, please ask your dentist prior to the procedure.

Types of Sinus Lifts:

There are two primary types of Sinus Lift procedures, each tailored to specific bone height requirements and the number of teeth to be replaced:

Internal Sinus Lifts:
Internal Sinus Lifts are employed when there is more than 4mm of vertical bone available but less than the conventional requirement for dental implant placement. This method is also suitable when replacing one or a few teeth.

External Sinus Lifts:
External Sinus Lifts are utilized when there is less than 4mm of vertical bone available for dental implant placement, particularly when multiple teeth require replacement.

Your dentist would have advised you on which type of sinus lift procedure you would be undergoing for your specific case.
