From Classroom to Clinic: A Week of Learning at Dental Designs Clinic
We are delighted to share that Dental Designs Clinic recently welcomed two Year 10 students from Tanglin Trust School for a week-long shadowing programme. It served as an opportunity for them to step beyond the classroom and experience the world of dentistry firsthand.
Both students came with a curiosity about the profession. One of them, currently undergoing orthodontic treatment herself, shared that her own experience with braces sparked a deeper interest in the science behind dentistry. For both, this week marked their very first time shadowing a dental professional.
The week-long attachment allowed the students to observe different aspects of modern dental care, gain exposure to specialist and general dental treatments, and develop a deeper understanding of what goes on behind the scenes in a multidisciplinary dental practice.
Over the course of the week, the students had the opportunity to shadow Dr Bernard Siew (Senior Dentist), Dr Elyssa Yap (Root Canal Specialist/Endodontist), and Dr Maria Raskina (General Dentist). They were introduced to a wide range of treatments, dental technologies, and day-to-day clinical operations.
Among the highlights was observing root canal treatments, which one student described as particularly fascinating. She shared that they were fascinated to learn that molar teeth can have five or more root canals! The use of digital dental X-rays also left a strong impression, offering a glimpse into how modern imaging supports accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
Beyond the treatment rooms, the students also had the chance to visit the in-house laboratory. Dental Designs Clinic makes its dental prostheses and appliances such as dental crowns, porcelain veneers, clear retainers and custom sports guards in-house, allowing for quality control and a faster turnaround time. They students observed the intricate layering of ceramics in particular, as well as techniques required to make a restoration look natural.
A Memorable Week
Reflecting on the experience, the student shared that one memorable aspect of the week for her was meeting the clinicians and witnessing their passion for the profession. Summing up the attachment in her own words, she said:
"It was a very lovely, educational week and really gave me a deeper insight in dentistry as a whole."
At Dental Designs Clinic, we believe that exposing students to real-world healthcare environments can play an important role in inspiring future healthcare professionals. Through our student shadowing programme, participants are given the opportunity to observe the clinical, technological, and human aspects of dentistry while gaining a broader appreciation of the profession..png?width=600&height=750&name=website%20new%20member%201%20(1).png)
