Cracked Tooth After Root Canal? (CROWNS) | BEFORE & BEYOND EP17

In this episode of our Before & Beyond video series, Dr Soo Peng Ru shares how he restored a real life case of cracked tooth that had root canal treatment using a zirconia onlay instead of a full crown to protect the tooth and keep more of it intact.

About The Video

This video looks at how a cracked tooth that already had a root canal, was carefully repaired. Instead of placing a full crown, which would mean cutting away more of the tooth, Dr Soo used a zirconia onlay. This strong, tooth-coloured piece helps protect the damaged tooth while keeping as much of the healthy structure as possible.

Dr Soo also explains how visible cracks in the tooth were cleaned out before treatment, to lower the chance of further damage. The space left behind was filled with a special material, and the onlay was carefully bonded on. With this method, the tooth stays strong, supported, and less likely to need removal in future. It’s a good example of how dental care today focuses on preserving your natural teeth for as long as possible.

When a tooth has had root canal treatment, it can become weaker and more likely to crack. If it already has cracks, like in this case being discussed, it’s important to protect it properly. Instead of using a full crown, which would involve trimming all around the tooth, Dr Soo chose a zirconia onlay, a strong cover that only goes on top and fits into the prepared space.

This approach helps keep more of your natural tooth in place. Before placing the onlay, Dr Soo gently removed the cracks and filled those areas with a tooth-coloured material. Then, the zirconia onlay was bonded securely. The result is a well-protected tooth that still has its strength, without being overly trimmed. It’s a smart, careful way to treat cracked teeth and shows how modern dentistry is focused on saving teeth and not just replacing them.
