About The Video
In this episode of Before and Beyond, Dr Jaclyn discusses about a young patient who felt his smile was not broad enough and that his front teeth lacked projection. Despite having naturally healthy, well-shaped teeth with no fillings, the patient was bothered by the narrow appearance of his smile, narrow palate and the upright angulation of his front teeth.
Dr Jaclyn walks through her detailed smile analysis, breaking down tooth angulation, gum levels, smile width, and facial symmetry to identify the contributing factors. Rather than recommending veneers, she outlines a more conservative treatment plan involving orthodontic alignment (dental braces) to correct tooth angulation, gum contouring to expose more tooth structure, and whitening to address minor colour variation, therefore preserving the patient's natural teeth while achieving a fuller, more balanced smile.
Smile improvement requires a systematic evaluation of multiple factors beyond just tooth alignment. In this case, Dr Jaclyn identified that the upper posterior teeth were tilted inward and partially covered by excess gum tissue. She also noted that the front teeth were excessively upright, reducing the projection and volume the patient was looking for.
Through diagrammatic smile analysis, she demonstrates how correcting tooth angulation can broaden the smile arc and improve how light reflects across the dental arch. Gum contouring was identified as a likely additional step to expose more of the natural tooth structure and improve symmetry between teeth.
The case highlights the value of conservative treatment planning, by prioritising alignment and minor aesthetic refinements, patients with naturally healthy teeth can achieve significant smile improvements while preserving their natural dental structure.
